Hi

Do you recommend having a filter in with Axolotls or not? I have heard they produce a lot of waste, but also that water flow can have negative effects?

Thanks
Danni

I would suggest a biological filter either internal or external, your choice. Always get the best filter you can afford.

Its true the filters flow can upset the axolotl but there are many methods of slowing down the flow, some use a spray bar to spread out the effect, i myself just have the outflow angled at the glass to diffuse it.

I would reccomend Eheim filters, they are phenomenal

A filter will greatly assist you, believe me! Unless you just have a lot of time on your hands and enjoy doing daily water changes, I believe a filter is a must!

What size tank do you have and do you know how to cycle a tank? How many axolotls do you have or are you planning to have?

If you use a big tank with lots of plants, you don´t need a filter. If you use a smallish tank or use no natural plants, then a filter will be indeed needed.

Ok, I already have a good filter, I was just checking if I should use it or not....looks like the answer is yes. Yes, I do know about Cycling as I used to keep fish when I was younger...I plan on just starting with one Axolotl and maybe getting another one later, I am not sure. Tank is about 55X30X20 (Lenth, Width, Height in cm), but I have other tanks of similar size/slightly bigger I could get out of the garage. Thanks for the help!

Hi Danni,

Make sure you don't get a filter that creates too strong a current. In my case, I had to make a DIY spray bar to resolve the issue.

Hope you find a good filter :)
