I finally got my axolotl tank and am now ready to order my chiller probably within the next two weeks. I have a 40 gallon breeder and after reading reviews am looking to get an Aqua Euro USA Max Chill Aquarium Chiller 1/13 hp since its for up to 50 gallons. My room temp in the dead of summer is 83 since we live in Florida and it says the chilling capacity is up: 30gal 20 degrees Fahrenheit/ 60gal 10 degrees Fahrenheit. So for my 40 I think that would be enough to keep it at the best temp for axolotls. I wont be filling it completely to the brim with water so it would probably be around 37 gallons of water to chill.

I am stuck though on what kind of filter pump to get though since I dont know much about them and I want something to help keep the tank as clean as possible. I know I have to get something strong enough to pump through the chiller and the GHP flow for the 160-290. Does anyone have any links to some good decent priced filter pumps that will work?

Are you looking for a canister or a pump for the chiller? Those are two separate items but I recommend getting a canister so you will have filtration and it will be able to push water through the chiller. Why aren't you filling the tank to the top? I'm just curious to know why.

noone ever really fills their tank all the way to the rim ... Its VERY normal to leave a 1 inch + gap at the top. I believe this is what the OP is talking about

I should mention that a 40 breeder actually holds about 45 gallons :)

As for a filter pump ... Thats a little confusing but you can always go on Amazon and look for a Canister filter, for approximately 45 gallons you will want a filter rated for about 250 gph ... You can always baffle the output. Also... This is off topic but look at the media ... You want permanent biological filtration included such as Bioballs and ceramic rings ... Its even better if you can get both :)

Canister filters are the best you can get. Low maintenance, and great at their job. Plus, you can just hook your chiller right in to it.

I've never heard of bio balls before so I am going to look those up, thank you. Also how does someone baffle the output if it is too much?

@ scorpio110684: I didnt want it completly filled to the brim to help prevent jumpers and to go a little easier on the chiller to make sure that the water temp can get as low as it can.

I actually have that one on one of my of my tanks. That one has a container where you could put in filter media such as carbon, bio balls, etc. I am not sure what the gph is on it so I would check on that.

It says 250 ghp so its the top rate that will work with the chiller I want. Do you like using it? Have you had any problems or does it do a good job keeping everything clean?

I haven't had any problems with it since I bought it almost 5 years or so ago. The only thing I wish it had was more compartments for filter media to go in. As it stands now you only have one container to put filter media in along with a sponge. I will probably buy a marineland c-530 to replace it soon, but I haven't had any problems with it.
