Filter media

How often are you supposed to clean/change filter media? I have an Aqua One 101F maxi internal filter. It's one of those filters that just has a sort of wirey sponge inside. I just moved the filter and all this gunk came floating out of it. It's been in the tank 3 and a half weeks. I'm cycling atm so I'm guessing don't clean it until cycling is complete? But once the tank is established, how often should i clean it and how often should i replace it? Cheers

Hey Lindsay, leave it in the filter for now until the tank has finished cycling. After that, it should be changed every two to three weeks

They grow up so fast *sob*

Thanks for the advice on the filter sponge also

mine is always full of axie poop or some decaying plant leaves etc. i need to clean it every week.

The best way to clean it if you only have a sponge and nothing else is to get a bowl of tank water, and just swish the sponge around in the tank water. This way you get rid of the gunk, and don't harm the bacteria growing on it.

What if you don't have a only a sponge? I have been wondering about this question as well. I have a Whisper hang filter with a sponge thing and a "Bio-bag". What should i do with that?

Whisper sucks because you only have the 'biobag' and no where for your bacteria to grow but on the bag. And this is suppose to be 'disposable', as in you throw it out and get a new one, and that's just cruddy for your bacterial colony. If you insist on having an overhang filter, go with one with a biowheel. I've used both Penguin and Marineland and never had a problem.

thank you for that Joan, but i would still like to know how often to change the "bio-bag". I plan on getting a new filter soon anyway but i need to knwo how often to change it.

Whenever it gets nasty.

You can get more miles out of one bag by running it under tap water and scrubbing it against itself and replacing the carbon inside.
