My filter died over the weekend and is now completely defunct,
I've since purchased a new (better,) one.

Ammonia has spiked to 4ppm since. I've done a 30% change washing the old filter in the new water.

Should I leave the old cartridge in the tank whilst using the new one?
Axy seems fine, not a bother on him, feeding well and no ill effects so far.

Cheers.

Can you put some of your old filter media into your new filter? That should help loads. Also do some big water changes to get the ammonia down.

And if worse comes to worse and the old media wont fit into new filter. Put it into a stocking/pair of tights and hang it by either the outflow / inflow or an air stone.
