I am getting ready to set up a new tank. I want to get everything in line before I get an Axolotl. I have previous experience with axolotls. I am just curious on what others put in their tanks and why they picked it.

I'm in a slightly different situation, I keep mine in a pond but I'll tell you about it :)
I have sand and silt at the bottom, a couple of large rocks, and stuffed full on elodea and a couple of pond lilies. They lay eggs every few weeks.

I got my axolotl in a 55 gallon tank with pool filter sand (looks like natural sand). I use a Tetra XP I think 50-75 gallon filter and have a couple of large rocks (half my axolotl's size) for decor. Also have a bit of Java fern and anubias in there. Need to get more plants, build the low lighting for the plants (dark corner) and the fans for the tank before it gets warm again. For a lid for the tank I like DIY screen tops.

I have a 3d rock background on the back wall and fine play sand as my substrate. I have a large pirate ship ornament that the axies can go in and out of as the please. I have a few bits of driftwood with anubias plants and some mopani wood and a few fake will plants. I use a canister filter with spray bar. I also have a diy screen top as a kid and also clip on fans. I really like my current set up but someone on here used a 3d background as a substrate which looked really good and I would love to try that some day.

I started with bare bottom but my guys didn't look like they could get a grip so I got some large river rocks but the poop and stuff got stuck under the rocks and it was a nightmare! I now have black sand from petco ad couldn't be happier with it

i have a 20 gallon long tank on its way here. I have large river rocks about 3-4 inches. No small ones that could be harmful. I have a back hanging filter. I have some hiding spots in my tank. I was wondering about live plants? What are some good ones to put in the tank?

Anubias, Java ferm, crypts, java moss and moss balls pop to mind but I can't think of any. Anything that can tolerate low lighting and colder water should work.

I would advice against the large river rocks because I've read of a lot of people finding that they accumulate a lot of gunk and make it harder to keep the tank clean. You could use sand and scatter some of the rocks around, but I don't know how you feel about sand.
