Hi - I moved the largest of my February hatched babes from the communal babes tank, when she ate a tiny sibling. 'Spot' (too small to sex at the time) joined 'Sparkle' (see the pic to the LHS), an 18 month old golden albino male, in his tank. During siphoning today I found eggs in & on the sand - about 20. Then I saw how dark & fat Spot is now, & deduced her sex! She is about 6 - 7 inches long & leucistic. Can I stop her producing more eggs, or is she on a roll, until empty? I realise she is too young to be breeding, although a fast grower &, so far, apparently healthy

Advice please.

Many thanks,

Heather, Spot & Sparkle

My guess is she will lay a batch of eggs, but I would separate her in a week or so and keep her well fed to encourage her to keep growing.

Given the fact that she is so young and this is her first clutch I doubt she'll lay to many eggs and there is also a good chance a bunch of them will be infertile. I think your best option is just to seperate her now to prevent further breeding after she finishes this round.

Update: about 15 or 16 eggs produced only, & all hatched in the last 3 days. I've been careful to check the tank daily for any sign of male activity, & none since! Brine shrimp hatchery working well - as chance would have it, we needed brine shrimp eggs for a practical 2 weeks ago, so I have a good supply to hand - there must be millions in 60g.......

Do many people expand to keeping axies in large outside tanks? I wondered about a water trough type size?
