By reading the discussions here, I've noticed that some people feed their newts dried or frozen foods. I'm wondering how some of you get your newts to eat these types of foods. I've read that for larvae, some people use crushed up fish flakes or crushed up "salamander bytes" from pet stores, and when it floats to the bottom is when they eat it. I've also read that adult newts will notice and go after frozen/dried foods as it drifts to the bottom of the tank. But how would efts be encouraged to take these foods?

Not all newts will eat these foods, generally it's only the very captive-friendly species like axolotls, C. pyrrhogaster, P. waltl, etc.

Frozen bloodworms will result in a feeding response far more often than flakes or pellets.

Efts can be trained to take small bits of non-living food from a tweezers. Start them with tiny bits of chopped earthworm. After they are "trained" they might be willing to accept other foods in the same way (but not flakes or pellets, please).
