They are very easy to find and cheap too...but they are not a really good food item. They are mostly fat and their exoskeleton is too rough. Also though it´s unlikely to happen i´ve heard of stomach problems due to the worms biting from the inside(they eat the worms alive and these worms have rough mandibles. If you´re going to use them i´d at least dust them with suplements and smash their mandibles. One of my bombina once puked one of this worms...maybe it was fighting back...

If you are going to feed mealworms I recommend decapitating them first. I agree with Rodrigo they are high in fat so I would definately feed sparingly. I feed these to my newt very sparingly only giving one once in a while because I find he has a hard time digesting the hard exoskeleton if I give him to many it is just too much for the system and he becomes very bloated from constipation. I have to agree again a cheap food but not a very good one. I would personally not use as a main food source but a decapitated one now and then wouldn't hurt.

thanks for the info, its just because its hard to find good food here but yes i wont feed them on these worms, just in case i run out of food, even he seems to like it.
I think ill start with fruit flyes, wish me luck; and thanks for the decapitating info.

Samuel,
If you are having trouble finding food (trust me I just went through this) look around the forum. Take a look in the Testimonials for web sites & I also took a look through the Live and Frozen Food section and caught a few there. I also spent hours on the computer out of this site looking for Bloodworms, baitshops & anywhere or any site I could find that would ship any kind of food for my newt. There are tons of sites out there. Hopefully you can find one that comes close to your door. I finally ended up on Ebay and bought some European night crawlers and am going to cultivate my own food source. They do ship worldwide & guarantee them alive. I wish you luck.

earthworms are definitely a better food source. You can go collect some and keep them in the refrigerator...they´ll last a couple of months.

Rodrigo.
I wish we all had that luxury. I don't know what winters are like where you live but right now I would have to dig through snow that probably would come up to my knees just to find the ground. Kind of sucks

Well...we don´t have snow now (a weird winter) but it´s definitely cold here...
I´m actually from the probably coldest city in spain hahaha
Anyway you could collect them in fall, and keep them during the winter...I did and had a nice source of food for november, december and january. Then i ran out of them and had to wait until this week to get more...xD

Dear All, I would appreciate some help identifying P. waltl disease and treatment. We received newts from Europe early November and a few maybe 3/70 had what it looked like lesions under the legs- at that time we thought maybe it was the stress of travel- now we think they probably had "red leg syndrome" (see picture). However a few weeks later other newts started to develop skin lesions (picture enclosed). The sender recommended to use sulfamerazine and we have treated them 2x and we are not sure they are all recovering. Does anyone have any experience with P. waltl diseases and could give some input on this? Any input would be greatly appreciated! Thank you.
