Feeding Black worms and sand

I recently just made a tank for my crested newts with a sand bottom is it OK if I feed them Black worms or do I have to be careful of them eating the sand

I have sand in all my tanks and I've never had any issues. Aquatic newts are very good at spitting the sand out before swallowing their food, but if they do ingest any it just passes through their digestive system and comes out the other end.
