Hi, I've been feeding my 8 month old axolotl about 4-6 mealworms daily, and my 3 month old axolotl 3-5 small mealworms daily. I'm just curious as to if this is too much, or to little? I feed them this much because they seem as if they are always hungry. They do not look very fat, and are very active, therefore I feed them as much as i see fitted, but in all honesty I dont know if this is the right thing to be doing or not. Help please?:)

This is their length and width.

Mealworms aren't the best diet for axolotls unfortunately. They have a tough exo-skeleton that axolotls find hard to digest and arent very nutricious to say the least but their are many alternatives. Some people feed their axolotls soley on earthworms (shop bought), this is fine. I personally feed mine a variety of different foods including: bloodworm, earthworm and good quality pellets (Hikari). They may also eat daphnia and brime shrimp but often become less interested as they get older.

I feed mine mealworms but only occasionally and only when the mealworms have just shed their skin and are still white.

Regards Neil

I find the blood worms and Soft sinking trout/salmon pellets great! and also you can buy special axolotl pellets. Earthworms are great if you have the stomach to handle it, whereas bloodworms come frozen :D goodluck

I purchased mealworms once but they only got spat out.

I feed Buttercup on earthworms from my garden, pellets or ghost shrimp.

Her now and then treats are flys, moths and frozen bloodworms.
