Hey guys,

I just got my first Japanese FBN the other day. When I brought her home, she was moving around like crazy, but now all she does is sit in a little tree that I have in my aquarium.

I fed her earthworms and she ate them.

Just wondering what normal activity is for them?

Also, would it be better to have 2? I got her out of a tank that had like 5 FBN's and like 5 Fire Bellied Toads.

Could she be lonely?

Newts aren't really all that active. If she eats and poops fine, I wouldn't worry about it not moving a lot.

How big is your tank? That is really the determining factor of whether or not you can get two.

She is moving alot more now.

But she's having problems eating. The store told me they fed her crickets...but she didn't like those. Then I got some earthworms and she's not eating those.

Any other advice for food?

And i have a 10 gallon tank...I think 2 wouldn't be a problem.

Most newts are wild caught and may only take live food. I have heard of people putting their newts in a small container full of the food they like that is alive. The idea is that they will not be able to resist after a while and eat. They do this because they have a hard time adjusting to captivity. Newts should only be fed a couple crickets a week at most but they should like the earthworms or you can try live bloodworms.

Make sure your newt doesn't have any fungal infections as they cause newts not to eat. I have a JFBN and he most likely has a fungal infection that I am treating right now with salt water. Some infections can take a while to show up like my newts infection showed up just a couple days ago after having him for 5 days. If it has a fungal infection and you wish to treat it, do NOT use salt that has iodine in it because iodine is dangerous to newts. Also don't use too much salt and only have the wound submerged underneath the salt water for about five minutes. I am by no means an expert but this is what other people have told me.
