I've had my newts for six months on a diet of earthworms and readily available bloodworms and tubifex worms. Recently the females have been getting huge. Like their skin is quite stretched, although only after earthworm feedings. Forearms towards head areas look normal, and the males show now difference. Are they just getting gravid?

ALSO! I fished out the largest female in order to photograph for this post. She seemed the fattest. As I was typing this I noticed large numbers of bubbles rising from my tank floor. As I got to the tank, I saw a half digested earthworm spew from the female I had handled. I assume it was from the cloaca since I saw a bit trailing from behind her tail as she swam away to hide. Is it possible she was having gas and digestive problems? Or could this just be a stress reaction from being handled? They have not been removed from the tank for 3 months. She seems fine now though..

EDIT : she did it again.. bad earthworm? stress reaction? or a bigger problem?

Most likely the worm was vomited. Handling is never a good idea but particularly so after feeding. An animal that has had a large meal, if stressed, might get rid of the extra weight to allow for a swift scape. Or the stress might interfere with digestion...
In the future i strongly suggest not handling your newts unless absolutely and unavoidably necessary. It does them no good.

Thanks az.. Yeah I know, never handle the newts! At least I know it's a natural reaction :p
