Hello,

I'd really appreciate some input. I'm about to start setting up my tank to cycle, but I can't decide between fake grass and sand.
My concern with fake grass is that it will go brown, be difficult to clean, or that bacteria won't be able to establish on it for the cycle.

I have found some iron sand but I'm concerned about iron levels with the axolotls? Is it safe? It's very soft, not sharp like others I've felt.

If both of these options are out, I will just use play sand or white sand.

Thank you in advance!

Are you referring to the astroturf stuff? I personally would not use fake grass as it is not designed for aquarium use and has not really been tested for safety. I would be concerned about it leaching stuff into the water.

I would recommend against iron sand and would opt for a silica based sand such as play sand. You can get a bag of Richgro play sand at Bunnings or Home Timber and Hardware for $9. Make sure you wash it well and sift out the larger gravel and chunks. It is very fine once washed and sifted thoroughly.
