Does anyone have any experience of their male axolotl depositing spermatophores without a mature female present?
I had 3 axolotls, less that a year old and approximately 25cm, in a tank. I thought that the wild type was probably a male, but that the 2 leucistics were not yet mature. Tuesday morning I found that spermatophores had been deposited around the tank. I had 2 spare tanks being cycled for fish, and used them to separate all 3 axolotls.
I found some information that said that the female would lay eggs between a few hours and 2 days after fertilisation. We have inspected all 3 tanks and cannot find any evidence of eggs.
Have we been lucky this time? Could one of the leucistics be a mature female but not be fertilised my the Monday night spermatophores? Could the male deposit spermatophores even without any other axolotls being mature females? Is it possible that I could still find eggs?
I am happy with the lack of eggs as all the axolotls are still relatively, and I will keep them separated until I'm sure I know the sex, then split them into male and female tanks.
