It is cold and snowy here in Michigan right now, so I thought I would post some salamander photos from this past october. First some habitat shots:

This is a stream in Allegheny County, NY, that I've been visiting for many years. On the day I visited it last october, I found a few Eurycea bislineata in the water. Here's a photo of one:

On other visits, I've found several other species of salamanders in the stream or in the surrounding woods. These include Desmognathus fuscus, Plethodon cinereus, P. glutinosus, Ambystoma maculatum, Notophthalmus viridescens, and Gyrinophilus porphyriticus.

Beautiful pictures! Your very lucky and I'm very jealous.

Thanks for sharing, Mike. Quite a few years ago I had the luck of seeing this species in a similar habitat in St. Lawrence County, N.Y..

Thanks, I'm glad you all enjoyed the photos.

Cameron, the bottom three were taken with a Canon digital rebel and an 80 mm Tamron macro lens.

Nice! I need to get a good camera.

Beautiful photos and habitat! This is probably among the most beautiful of small NA plethodontids, IMO of course.

That's a wonderful habitat and the detail on the your photos is amazing as usual.

Do they hang out openly in the water like the photos or did you have to check under the rocks?

I have never seen the adults of this species out during the day. The individual from the photo was found in a clump of submerged leaves. However, I have seen them out in the water and crawling about on the ground on wet nights.

Dear All, I would appreciate some help identifying P. waltl disease and treatment. We received newts from Europe early November and a few maybe 3/70 had what it looked like lesions under the legs- at that time we thought maybe it was the stress of travel- now we think they probably had "red leg syndrome" (see picture). However a few weeks later other newts started to develop skin lesions (picture enclosed). The sender recommended to use sulfamerazine and we have treated them 2x and we are not sure they are all recovering. Does anyone have any experience with P. waltl diseases and could give some input on this? Any input would be greatly appreciated! Thank you.

sorry I am having a hard time trying to upload the pictures- I have them saved on my hard drive... any suggestions-the prompts here are not allowing for downloads that way as far as I can tell. Thanks
