Escapee

I was checking on my two spotted salamanders today - and there was only one in the container. We took out all the substrate and searched everywhere in the tank and he is truly gone. These two were just little guys, about 2-3", and very inactive as far as I could tell, and I'm amazed one managed to escape.
I've searched everywhere within about 20 feet of the tank (except for carpeted areas which I doubt he could have gotten far on). We even pulled out the fridge and dishwasher.
I put out 'salamander traps' tonight (soaking wet paper towels) - about a dozen scattered around possible hiding areas. Hopefully if he is still alive and able to move around, he will be attracted to them. It was humid today, but I'm still afraid he is dried up or has so much dust and junk stuck to him that he can't move...

You'd be amazed at what they can escape. And you 'd be amazed at how far they can go. Search the entire house, top to bottom, get a flashlight and look everywhere, even the tiniest little spaces you don't think a salamander could possibly fit. We've all had an escape or two in our time. Don't feel too bad.

Any luck yet? They can move around quite well even when unrecognizable dust balls.. stumbled over one or two in my hallway (huge yelp at 5.30am but the newt was ok).

Unfortunately I havn't found the salamander. Do they tend to be attracted to water? I was thinking I might try the wet paper towels again tonight. But I've looked everywhere and he seems to be gone. Either the dog ate him, or he managed to squeeze into some inaccessible space. I'm still keeping an eye out for him but I don't have much hope anymore.

I would keep the wet towels out, if you have potted plants in an area he could reach check those too, you may also want to look further than twenty feet. They can get very far I would even check capeted areas. good luck, I hope she is still okay.
