Recently I had given my newts to a friend. We set up the tank together and her ouse is the perfect temp for them and everything! IT was all going smoothly until yesterday she called and screamed into my ear:
"THEYRE GONE! OMG! WHAT DO I DO!?"
I told her to put some shallow dishes of water in the dark corners of the room where they got lost, and check them for newts twice a day. Is there anything else we could do?

Go to http://www.caudata.org/cc/faq/FAQmis.shtml. Then scroll down to "My newt or salamander escaped. What should I do? ". Chances are, unless your friend's house is moist all over, that the newts are already dead. The newts won't necessarily be looking for water. I personally think it would be much more effective to search for them actively (overturning furniture, looking for them etc.), then to sit and wait for them to find water. Also, to prevent future escapes, try and find how the animals escaped, this might lead you in the right direction to look for them as well.

She forgat to put the cover back on their tank after feeding them, thats how they escaped. She already looked through the area they got lost in. Why do you think they died already? they were going through a terrestrial stage anyway, i mean they werent in the water to begin with.

They dry out awful fast. They can also move suprisingly far before they dry out. I found one escapee at least 25 feet away from the tank.

I've noticed that they seem to be able to sense water or perhaps humidity. If their is a bathroom of sorts they may have tried to go there.

Sorry to be pessimistic, but looking at the time of this posting, I have a feeling the newts are dead already.

try damp bath towels i have found escaped newts under them many times even in the mop not theat i get alot of newts escape but if it has been more than 24hrs it could be bad cheers justin

Yeah when of mine somehow jumped out after his first 10 minutes in the tank, he was so hard to find. I finally used this method of going from wall backwards to the tank, and found the little guy under an inactive heater. So I wish you the best, but if you don't find him soon... well find him real soon and rinse him off....

Sorry about the loss. I had a newt escape but luckily lived. He escaped during the day and found him barley alive 2 days later a a dinner party. lol big screams. next time tell your friend to search in a corner and put wet towels there.

Sorry
