Hi Folks,

I got a chance to get out to California for a couple days around Christmas. It was nice to walk around barefoot and see some salamanders out. Lots of Ensatina and Batrachoseps. Here's one of the Ensatina (from Santa Cruz Co.):

And some habitat shots from the same day:

I am really amazed by the great quality of the first picture, that is a one in a million picture! Great work and thanks for sharing Mike!

Wow great shots! And the habitat looks nice also. That first photo is good enough for a book/calendar photo

Thanks! Glad you enjoyed them.

Wonderful pictures.

We were caught in a rainstorm and drenched to the bone just two weeks ago. The weather has been hit or miss the past month.

That first pic is definitely pic of the month quality. It's beautiful. How big was it?

Thanks to all for the nice compliments, I really appreciate it.

Pin-pin, did you get a chance to get out for salamanders when the rains were really bad? We had left before then, but it sounded bad. There was a great post on www.fieldherpforum.com by a guy who went out finding herps when everything was flooded. Some great photos.

Carly, it was a medium Ensatina, probably about 5cm snout-vent length. Really a great animal.

Thanks again, Mike

Dear All, I would appreciate some help identifying P. waltl disease and treatment. We received newts from Europe early November and a few maybe 3/70 had what it looked like lesions under the legs- at that time we thought maybe it was the stress of travel- now we think they probably had "red leg syndrome" (see picture). However a few weeks later other newts started to develop skin lesions (picture enclosed). The sender recommended to use sulfamerazine and we have treated them 2x and we are not sure they are all recovering. Does anyone have any experience with P. waltl diseases and could give some input on this? Any input would be greatly appreciated! Thank you.

sorry I am having a hard time trying to upload the pictures- I have them saved on my hard drive... any suggestions-the prompts here are not allowing for downloads that way as far as I can tell. Thanks
