I've managed to figure out how to set up the filter. I've plugged it in but nothing is happening. It's making noise, just not doing anything. After putting it together, is there another step or something else I have to do?

We tried to empty the canister and start from scratch with this method, but still nothing. How to prime a Eheim classic canister filter - YouTube

Should there be some sort of suction from the intake end? There's nothing. We tried sucking on the output and nothing either. The water comes up but then goes back down immediately.

The first time I set mine up...
I had to fill the canister with tank water... Then fill the tubes with tank water to help it get started. Then run the filter with the suction part (tpo) open, and the bottom valve closed for about 30 seconds... Then without interruption, open the out suction, and it should prime itself :D

Good luck and ask more questions if you need to

Thanks! I tried that method first and sadly it didn't work. Then we tried the sucking method. It worked for about 45 seconds and now the water is just sitting in the input tube not moving at all. I'm going to return it and I'll have to use another type of filter. Thanks though.

I wouldn't give up on the canister altogether; you may have a dud is all. I would say return it and if the new one doesn't work, then abandon ship.

I have this exact filter, and it works perfectly... I agree it would be wise to switch it out... But in the end, it's up to you.

It could be a pin hole in one of the tubes...
