Does anyone know if the eggs are viable if they fall off of the leaves and are resting on the aquarium floor? We have one that looks like it's about to hatch judging from the color and size of what's inside (FBN), but it fell today. Do they hatch from the leaves or is this about to hatch or could it have just received a death sentence?

Also, at what time frame do we deem larva unsuitable to share a space? Our sole larva, which has just sprouted back legs, is estimated to be close to two weeks old. We were not trying to breed the newts and saw him amongst the gravel one day, so we are not sure when exactly he emerged. We've since moved him to his own tank. Since he's still so small, I would think he couldn't possibly try to feed on a sibling. When is the gap too large to house them together? We have a few eggs that look like they're pretty ripe, though we are novices and never thought the newts would reproduce (lousy information from the pet store!)

Thanks for any advice,
Dana

The eggs are just fine, even if they fall off the leaves. No reason to worry about that one.

FBN larvae are not particularly cannibalistic. I wouldn't hesitate to house them together if they are within a month of the same hatch date. However... this supposes that they have plenty of other food to eat.

Congratulations, and good luck with the larvae!

Thank you! My sons are very excited and so am I. The larvae have plenty of food and the live stuff should arrive tomorrow. "Newty" has been eating the frozen stuff fairly well.

Thanks again,
Dana
