I wish the photos were clearer, but they do show some interesting stages in their development.

Day 6
Gills elongating; pushing ventroposteriorly--they're really starting to look like miniature axolotls.

Thanks for all the encouragement!

Yeah, I teach, but hanging out around places like this really enforces the idea that everyone has a lot to learn. So many great resources around.

On my way out to work this morning I noticed the first one managed to hatch. I didn't have time to put any food in, but he should be fine for awhile--especially considering he wasn't out when I went to bed around 3:30 this morning

I hope the next set will show their eyes--it's amazing to see their eyes looking back at you through the wall of the egg. One thing my current camera is probably not going to be able to grab is a view of their three-chambered heart, which is especially apparent in the light colored embryos. You can even see the little heart beating.

I think they're the most amazing at this stage, because, like you said, you can see inside them. You can see the brain, the optic nerve, the liver, kidneys, the heart. It's definately VERY awesome.

Dear All, I would appreciate some help identifying P. waltl disease and treatment. We received newts from Europe early November and a few maybe 3/70 had what it looked like lesions under the legs- at that time we thought maybe it was the stress of travel- now we think they probably had "red leg syndrome" (see picture). However a few weeks later other newts started to develop skin lesions (picture enclosed). The sender recommended to use sulfamerazine and we have treated them 2x and we are not sure they are all recovering. Does anyone have any experience with P. waltl diseases and could give some input on this? Any input would be greatly appreciated! Thank you.
