Eating spermatophores

My male dropped some spermatophores in the tank for my females but they didn't use any of them. But a day later they're gone.

A few days ago I saw them again but then I saw my male eating one of those spermatophores.

So: Do axies clean up the spermatophores by eating them all, or was it just one spermatophore that got eaten by my axie and did the others just... dissolve or so?

I spotted my male eat a spermatophore once, but it kinda seemed like it was more of an accident than anything else...
