Hey all, I have 20 new axie babies and they are all so cute and doing well. I took around 50 eggs out of the parent tank and left the rest in their tank to be eaten (My only option at the time:( ) several of the babies in the parent tank have hatched as the parents didn't bother to eat any of the eggs :S they haven't even tried to eat the teeny little babies that are swimming around in their tank... is this a bad sign? (I am in the process of rescuing the little strays)
I managed to give most of my eggs that were in the parent tank to a specialist fish shop and some others are going off to a university to be studied.... I guess this is better than them being eaten. I'm just worried that my big axies are weird for not eating their eggs :S should I be????
Thanx for any feedback

Hi Hanniebumblebee,

Your axies could be really well fed already so they are not feeling peckish. In addition, if your tank has a lot of hiding places, the larvae may be well hidden to avoid being eaten. I would say there is absolutely nothing wrong with your adult axies.

I want to applaud you for wanting to ensure welfare for your hatched larvae and promote education. This is evident by you wanting to rescue the hatched survivors. You have donated some to the eggs to an educational institution and that is commendable too.

You may like to consider raising the hatched larvae, donating them or rehoming them.

Best regards.

Hi Hannie,

Axolotls do not automatically eat eggs. They have to figure out first that the eggs are edible - once they do figure that out, though, they will always eat the eggs. The parents will also most definitely eat the larvae soone or later. The larvae may just need to get a bit bigger for the parents to notice them. Sometimes one or two larvae will successfully evade their parents for months, but it really is only a matter of time - of course, if you keep rescuing them, the parents can't eat them. ;)

Congratulations on your little larvae!

-Eva
