Greetings, I cared for a wild Eastern tiger salamander when I was much younger and always dreamed of having more.
I recently picked up a pair this January. 1 Male and 1 Female. This is my bioactive enclosure and Male Harry Houdini. He is a professional escape artist like his namesake.
My Female Bess never escapes and sleeps other than when hungry.
The substrate is a mix of peat, sand, charcoal, ground pine bark and needles, The substrate is deeper on the right side for burrowing.
I used natural oak branch bark pieces for habitat structure with an Indian almond leaf and fern moss as a roof.
On the left side is their water area that includes smooth river stones, guppy grass, duckweed and a very small pump for water circulation.
Other friends in the enclosure include some isopods and springtails for cleanup.
I have a humidifier adding moisture 12 hours a day adding clean water and keeping humidity up.
Surprisingly the habitat smells great (like a terrarium). I remove water monthly to keep from filling up by the humidifier.
