HI i live in the hampton roads area of Virginia and was wondering if anyone know of a place close by where i could locate some eastern spotted newts. Im will to travel a few hours if needed. If anyone in or near the area knows where to find them or even like to go hunt for some id be a great help thanks. Chris

Hi, my boyfriend is from that area of VA. He's not really an amphibian/reptile guy, but he might recall of a pet store or two that might have them. I'll ask him about it tomorrow.

Thanks but i think its againt the law for petshops to sell local animals. Iv search many petshops with no luck that why i was to catch them.

Oh, I misunderstood you. I too am looking to catch some little guys that live in MA. I haven't a clue as to where to look.
The only thing I can remember is that when I was little, I found a salamander near my house. So, I know they're out there somewhere.

you two might want to look into the laws of catching and keeping native herps as pets, as i think its illegal in virginia. living in hampton roads, i'm positive you wont find any in town.

besides: wild specimins usually have quite a few native parasites and may not do well in captivity

I also live in the Hampton Roads area, there are not too many places to look in this highly populated area. There is nothing illegal about keeping anything that is not endangered or threatened in Virginia. You can keep up to five of any one species, although most salamander species are considered bait for fishing and the laws are rather lax for those. I work at the Virginia living Museum, if you want to ask more detailed questions feel free to give me a call, 595-1900 extension 234.

Hi, I live in Northern Virginia. I know your frustration. Easterns are supposed to be abundant around here, but despite years of searching, I never found any (found all kinds of other things though)! So last year I took a trip to my grandparents house in West Virginia and visited a pond where I used to find them as a kid. The pond was significantly smaller, but the newts were still there. I took 5 home and they are doing great (I just cleaned their tank today). They already laid eggs for me once, but the babies are all gone. If you are still interested when breeding season gets here, drop me a line. As far as pet stores selling them, I know it's illegal here in Virginia to sell native species, but still saw them for sale in PetsMart once.

Hehe thats what i figured well thanks for the info and good luck with your newts. I may be interested next breeding season so keep in touch id love to know what your keeping them in and feeding them.

I keep them in a glass aquarium with a bottom of medium sized, smooth rounded stones. They love to dig in between the stones and flip them over! I also have some large, oddly shaped rocks on one side of the tank that provides a cavelike area. The setup has a land area and a water area. They spend equal amounts on both. I also have a variety of live and plastic plants as well as a filter. I tried to make their habitat to match the habitat I found them in (minus the muddy water). I feed them all sorts of things, but their favorite is large frozen bloodworms. They will also eat earthworms, but only occasionally. I try to give them other bugs too, but the bugs usually just end up crawling around on their heads for a while. I really couldn't be happier with them! They are very peaceful and never attack eachother. They aren't afraid of me, and often peer at me through the glass. They haven't given me any health problems so far and they seem to be good breeders. The only thing is...though the adults are docile, the larger larvae will attack the smaller ones. So if some grow faster than the others, you do have to seperate them.

Sounds nice my hongkong warty newt eggs just started hatching today. Is there any way you could post some pics of your tank also how many gallons is it.

If and when either of you have eggs or larva that you want to give away, please let me know. I'd be interested.

I'd love some of them too. Keep us up to date S.T.

Hey everyone, just want a little advice. Its 55 - 60 celcius in my Salamanders tank. Hes curled up and tyring ti bury himself, Im assuming hes too cold. I was wondering if he would benefit from a heated rock cave (since he LOVES his cave) that I could set on low? I NEVER see him curled up and trying to bury himself unless his tank sits at 63 degrees celcius or lower. So I am assuming hes a little uncomfortable.

He also seems a little sluggish, again, assuming hes cold. Having heating trouble with the new house right now. What do we think? Was thinking of grabbing this for him since its got very low, medium, and higher medium heat settings that exude heat downward inside the rock cave but ALSO exudes it UPWARDS outside of the rock cave, effectively keeping the tank itself a little warm. Seems like it miiiight be a little small for him though, my guy is about 7 inches from tip of his nose tothe tip of his tail.
