Eastern newts with C.o.s

My friend works at a Petworld. They recently got in some eastern newts. But since they are native to America, they cant sell them anymore. He said he would sell me some if I wanted any. They are the same size as the C.o.s. I was just wondering if they could co-exist with eachother in the same tank. I would of course quarantine them alone for a month to make sure they are healthy.

no bad idea it is mixing species! i don't know much about the biology of these species but i can tell you that keeping different animals from different parts of the world in the same vivarium is a big no no!

ya thats what I figured. I know mixing species is a big no no. I just really want the easterns and have no room for them. Darn. The eastern newts are so pretty. Wish i could get one or 2.

You could get some just keep them in a rubbermade tub until you can get a tank.

I could, but like I said I have no more room for any tanks. I will just have to be happy with all the animals I have already.

you could always divide up the tank into two equal sections using a pre-cut sheet of glass siliconed in so that the two sections are completely separate (so long as you don't get too many newts for the total size).

yes, that would be a good suggestion, and then cover up the partition with aquatic plants and rockwork to suggest that there isn't a partition at all

Bad idea. you will need to make sure the partition fits tighter than a glove, because if there is even the smallest hole, the newts will probaly find a way through it. Also, unless you use very high grade sealant, it is likely that there will be at least a little water transfer between the two tanks, which means there can also be pathogen exchange between the two species.

I personally think that partioning tanks is only ok when you want to house 2 groups of the same species in tandem and fighting/pathogen risks in the case of a breakdown are minimal.

This is a standard technique in fish pet shops. You in effect make one tank into two tanks. Of course the dividing panel has to be sealed completely, but when have you ever constructed a fish tank which was not sealed completely. Standard grade aquarium silicone is used for constructing whole 'all glass' tanks from scratch and is adequate for this purpose.

One big difference there, the tanks in petstores are temporary holding tanks, not the animals permenant residency.

and most petstores dont give a damn about the health of the animals in their store. they just care about keeping them alive long enough to sell them.

plus, by the time you get all the glass cut and buy the high grade sealant, i can gaurentee you that it will cost more than a 10 gallon tank would have.

Lol. Probably. I know they shouldnt be together. I just really wanted them to be. Oh well. Pet stores suck. Thx for all the input guys and gals.

Hey John K...and everybody else! I live in Watertown, Wisconsin. Which Petworld has those newts? Do you think I could get access to them? I have a 10 gallon set up empty right now so would love to have some eastern newts! I have firebelly, warty, paddletail, and green newts already....and 5 salamander set ups.....but have been looking around for eastern newts. You can contact me at this e-mail address: lovell8575@sbcglobal.net Also....a general question for all of you folks......I am picking up a spotted tiger salamander tomorrow....any body in here had any luck with this species? I have been told that it should be treated just like a texas barred salamander....so that is the set up I have for it.

Not really man. My friend works there and said they arent supposed to sell them anymore. They have them in the back room now. He said he'd sell me some when the reptile manager wasnt there. If you live near Waukasha Wisconsin, then mabye we could figure something out.

Hey John, I am about 45 minutes from Waukesha. I am about 40 minutes from the Petworld on Bluemound. Would love to work out a trade or something.

Well if you want, I will call my buddy up and ask him if they still have the easterns. If they do, I will ask him what day the reptile manager is gone, then I will post the day and time here that we could meet up and if you can meet me there, we could get that done.

Hey John, Thanks a lot for the offer! Let your buddy know that if a trade would work....I might be able to do that too! If you wanna e-mail me (lovell8575@sbcglobal.net) we can figure something out!
