Hi everyone! So just today I found out that my axolotl tank is infested with Drain fly larvae (😭). For what I can tell there currently are eggs, and larvea in the aquarium (I don’t think there are any pupae yet but I could be mistake). I did find one adult at the top of the aquarium on the glass (maybe it was the female that laid the eggs?) and I quickly put it outside. So far I changed out 50% of the water and I’m removing larvae and throwing them outside whenever I see any, but besides that I really don’t know what to do. I’m quite worried, I don’t have experience with any sort of infestation in my axolotl tank. Any help/advice would be beyond gratefully appreciated. In addition to this I was wondering if any one had any tips for how I can keep the infestation out of the rest of the house.

Thank you so much for reading this and I hope to hear from you all soon

Much thanks,
BasilBear

Here is a photo of one of the larvae on the filter output (I’m actually wondering now if this is a pupae). Again any advice would be greatly appreciate, thank you:)

although drain flies are annoying they pose little to no risk to axolotls (the larvae may even eat any microorganisms in the tank), without there being any small predators such as fish in the tank (although axolotls will snap at the larvae they are too small to keep an axolotls interest for long) there isn't much that can be done as a preventative and pesticides can be harmful to an axolotl.
a lid on the tank can help reduce the amount of flies getting to the water as can using mesh.
