So i was feeding Wellington.......thats his name......and he was in his cave, a cricket went in the cave i saw wellington go for him, miss.then i heard a faint squeak sound then he went for the cricket again and nailed him. it was funny cause it was like when he missed he was saying son of a &^%#@!!! it was super cute, just wondering if anyone else hears this?

I've heard this in various newts and salamanders. I've only heard it when they are striking at something or when they are picked up.

Your Wellington is a tiger sal, right? Salamanders, with little exception do not produce vocalizations due to the lack of vocal chords/sacs. However, tigers sometimes make a squeak-like noise. It is thought that these noises are produced from air being forced through the nares.

I've heard squeaking in tigers, Jefferson's sals, and just once out of my Taricha. I've never heard it out of smaller salamanders, but I wonder if it's just a case that their squeaks are too high pitched to hear. But like Jan said, it's just a forced air vibration, rather than vocalizations.

I'm pretty sure my newts make squeaky airy sounds when they eat or are startled.
