Having had trace ammonia levels (0.25 ppm) in my new 2.5ft tank for about a week (it is water changed every time I get 0.25ppm ammonia and I add Quick Start/Stress Zyme for good luck - it's tested daily), I mentioned it casually to my LFS owner (a fairly good guy who isn't just out to sell - he does give good advice and often suggests cheaper alternatives that work rather than just the stuff in his shop).
At which point he produced PolyFilter. Now, this stuff is £15 a sheet  He told me that you can simply cut a bit off and float it in the water, leaving it to soak up (literally) any and all nasties in the water. I wasn't sure if it really merited half a day's wages, but when he told me that, in a well established tank, it can last up to a year, I was swayed a little. My carbon filter media costs £6 for a three month's supply - £24 a year, just for carbon foams - and carbon needs to be replaced every month, and releases toxins back into the water. So suddenly £15 didn't seem so bad.

I've cut a small piece off and put it in my new(ish) axxie tank with my two axolotls, and, still a little dubious, I read up on it. Glowing reviews all around, some from very experienced fish hobbyists.

What I'm basically wondering is, does anyone on this forum use it, do you think it merits the £15 price tag, and, if it's so super-duper that it absorbs all the ammonia in the tank, as well as nitrite and nitrate, is it going to crash my cycle? I bought it mainly to ensure my axxies don't get poisoned by their water.
In short, was I duped?
