does keeping axolotls in a room that has the lights on at night affect breeding?

i ask this because i have 2 axolotls, male and female that have breed twice. Those 2 times that they have breed has been when have been away for about 2 weeks therefore the lights have been off. they have not breed for ages and i was just wondering if it was because i have my bedroom lights on untill i go to bed (axolotls are kept in my bed room that oftenly has the lights on at nighs)

hi
im no expert on axolotls but if im correct lighting does affect their breeding as they tend to breed in the months when there are less lights
im not sure youll have to check:cool::confused:

Axolotls are nocturnal, so having lights on at night could disrupt their natural schedule. But I think light cycles may have a small effect on breeding schedules, but it's usually more attributed to water temperature. Do you do a big water change before you leave/when you come home?

I seem to remember reading somewhere that the axolotls at the Ambystoma genetic stock center still breed at the right time of year even when they have no access to natural light, are probably maintained at a constant temperature and have a uniform amount of artificial light every day. They somehow just know when it's summer and winter! Maybe they look out for Christmas cards on the staff's desks :0) Axolotls do like to mate and lays eggs in the dark although once they are in the mood there is no stopping them sometimes. Could you switch out the lights in your room earlier and do whatever you're doing in your room somewhere else?

Regards Neil

sorry it has taken me a while to reply :( been really really busy

they have breed before twice as i have mentioned, and i only have filters that create large amounts of currents. I have looked in many local pet stores for lower output of water and have had no luck finding one so i only have a pump and air stone in my tank. So given that i have no filter I do 50% water changes weekly,.

another question is just recently i looked in the cave of where my female very often like to hang out in, to find 4-6 eggs. Unfortuanally they are in very bad shape i dont think these where breeding eggs tho? they havn't been stuck to anything and the yolks have fallen out of some. Im 95% sure that are and have not been fertilized. I was very puzzeled as i have not seen this before? out of my 3 years of keeping axolotls. The only thing that came to mind is that i thought they might just be her body just starting to produce this seasons eggs? she is not very fat ( doesn't look like shes carrying many eggs) and its gettting closer to winter where i am .Although 1 week prior to her last spawning she was not very fat at all. and she layed about 400 eggs. I was just wondering if you might have some clue to those very strange eggs i found?

please help me :D!!!!!!!

Thanks for the info, ill try get my lights out earlyer.

The hard thing is i keep alot more that axolotls and im usually changing water at nights due to school and home work. i have about 6 Fish fry tanks full of fry that need water changes twice a day!!!!! its a bit anoying :D + i have another 4 tanks that occasonally need water changes like my breeder fish tanks.. its gets stressful ill tell ya that. haha :)

In response to the strange eggs you found I can only hazard a guess that your female just laid a very small number of eggs. Axolotls don't lay eggs unless they have been fertilized, if no male is around they will reabsorb them. I'm not sure sure why the eggs had gone bad unless the water quality inside the tunnel was poor or the action of the female moving in and out of the tunnel somehow damaged them?

If you have a pump and an airstone and are looking for a low output filter why not buy a sponge filter or a corner filter. Both are cheap and much better than not filter at all

If you can't find any sponge filters locally, it's probably easiest just to order some on line. They're still pretty cheap.

Hi, just a thought, but if your filters output is too strong, i have seen some people create a way to soften the flow of water by adding pipework into the tank and directing the output of the filter onto the pipework so when it enters the tank it is much more calm, i will have a look to see if i can find an example and post it or send you a link.

Thats a good idea, i am currently using all my filters on fish tanks atm. I dont need a filter just yet as they have ben without one for 3 years.
