Do male Dobrogicus newts have the orange stripe in the middle of their backs? I know that the females do. I purchased a Dobrogicus a while ago and was told it was a male but I'm still not sure its a male or female. To tell the truth I think its a female. I'm pretty sure I've been had!

Depends on wether it´s sexually mature or not.
Adult males should always have a crest..not matter how tinny it is... It can be almost non-existent but it´s there.
Females don´t....females have the stripe.

I've been had. I am disapointed because I got the T. Dobro from a person who I know shouldn't be making these mistakes.

Bummer dude. Hopefully it was just a mistake and the situation can be corrected.

If not, I suggest you post a testimonial about the individual you got them from so the rest of us can learn from the situation. I'm not one for stirring up trouble, but if you can't get some true solvency from the supplier I believe you should alert the rest of the community.

Good luck getting the situation corrected!

I don´t agree Terry...
Carnifex have a yellow stripe, but my dobrogicus as juveniles had a stripe too, and my female (which is very obviously a dobrogicus) has an orange/brown stripe.

James, perhaps you could post some pictures? Then we can check to make sure.

I agree, my female dobro has the orange stripe on her back too.

If you aren't sure what it is how can you be sure you have been had? Male dobrogicus can be sexed by what looks like a black line where their crest will come up. I've heard it described as a male has a black line going down the middle of its back and a female has a brown or light orange line.

I can't remember if I sold it to you or not. My guess is nobody was out to defraud you. Some salamanders are easily sexed and sometimes sexing mistakes are made. I think male dobros are usually easy to sex. It would happen more often that a young dobro was sexed wrong as a female and it turned out to be a male.

Well I'm sure now what gender the newt is. This is morning I went to go check on it and I saw him laying eggs. So now hes a female for sure. Thats awesome, laying eggs and all but I purchased the newt thinking it was a male. When I 1st got the newt I thought to myself that it was a not a male because how it so resembles a female. I asked the breeder again about the sex of the newt and his words were very confident about the gender. Dissapointed for sure......

fact is that some of them have it some of them don`t.

I was stating a fact about the female that I have, and backing up what Rodrigo said about his twice.

Thanks for your input though.

receiving a female who is actively laying eggs isn't too bad. are the eggs fertilized?

Hey everyone, just want a little advice. Its 55 - 60 celcius in my Salamanders tank. Hes curled up and tyring ti bury himself, Im assuming hes too cold. I was wondering if he would benefit from a heated rock cave (since he LOVES his cave) that I could set on low? I NEVER see him curled up and trying to bury himself unless his tank sits at 63 degrees celcius or lower. So I am assuming hes a little uncomfortable.

He also seems a little sluggish, again, assuming hes cold. Having heating trouble with the new house right now. What do we think? Was thinking of grabbing this for him since its got very low, medium, and higher medium heat settings that exude heat downward inside the rock cave but ALSO exudes it UPWARDS outside of the rock cave, effectively keeping the tank itself a little warm. Seems like it miiiight be a little small for him though, my guy is about 7 inches from tip of his nose tothe tip of his tail.
