Just purchased 2 fire bellied newts from a shop and the member of staff who sold them just told us that all we needed to do was put them in a tank with shallow water with access to land for them to rest on. He siad that we could use just normal tap water , as long as it was luke warm to start off with. However i have read that wateer with chlorine in is dangrous for them . Is this true ??

Don't listen to the guy at the store. You have come to the right place for caudate info. They need dechlorinated water. Cold water is better than lukewarm water. Use room temperature or colder water. Never use warmer than room temperature water for newts.

Thanks you that was very helpful, much more helpful than the person in the pet store :)

When we first got our salamader the pet store told us to treat it like a lizard. Didn't sound right so I came here and found out the guy was an idiot. Makes me think how many salamaders have died out there in some miserable state because of pet store people telling people how to take care of salamaders, when they have no clue. At least they could say is look on the net, instead of guessing.

It's sad when you go to a pet store and see the care that herps get. I can't tell you how many times I go into one of them and the staff is playing with the critters and I see tanks with empty water dishes and the like. Galls me. My wife looks at my set jaw and says, "time to go"? And I still don't know why the mentality of many staff people is that only fish need a dechlorinator...
