Just noticed a few weeks ago that my male axo bit two of my females gills half way down :/
Do the grow back eventually or are hey going to be like that for the rest of its life?

I bought my little guy with shorter gills on one side. That was several months ago, and they haven't grown back at all. Oh well...it gives him personality. ;)

It really does give them personality lol.. I was just curious to see if they did or not, but thanks or your response Sharon

I have a little juvenile who came with a nibbled gill  in under 6 weeks it's almost completely regrown :)

I think potentially they can grow back depending on their age & how badly damaged the gills have been - I'm guessing bitten off is easier to regrow than shortened gills shrunk back due to ammonia burn etc. I also think good water conditions make a huge difference as to how fast they grow back.

my one tony lost his all his on one side and they grew back in time but one forked dont know why but it looks cute. it takes alot of energy for them to regrow i imagine so i gave him lots of food while he regrew his.

I also bought one of my axolotls with really short gills on one side!
It does take quite a while for them to grow back though.

What if its bit all the way down to its actual gill? :/ will it still regrow then or be featherless on one side ?

Hey everyone, just want a little advice. Its 55 - 60 celcius in my Salamanders tank. Hes curled up and tyring ti bury himself, Im assuming hes too cold. I was wondering if he would benefit from a heated rock cave (since he LOVES his cave) that I could set on low? I NEVER see him curled up and trying to bury himself unless his tank sits at 63 degrees celcius or lower. So I am assuming hes a little uncomfortable.

He also seems a little sluggish, again, assuming hes cold. Having heating trouble with the new house right now. What do we think? Was thinking of grabbing this for him since its got very low, medium, and higher medium heat settings that exude heat downward inside the rock cave but ALSO exudes it UPWARDS outside of the rock cave, effectively keeping the tank itself a little warm. Seems like it miiiight be a little small for him though, my guy is about 7 inches from tip of his nose tothe tip of his tail.
