Hi,

I have made my own aquarium lid from plywood. However I am wondering what paint people reccomended finishing with. Currently I have painted it with a water based matt black however I'm worried that the condensation inside will cause chemicals in the paint to drop into the water. I have lost one axolotl so I'm not taking any chances.

My questions are:
- what is the safest paint for aquariums?
- can I paint whatever is reccomended on top of the matt black paint that's already there?
- where in the uk can this type of paint be sourced?

Thankyou in advance.
James

anything that says non toxic should be safe. made safer with some sort of sealant for eg shower sealant, 2 coats, then you could spend an extra few pounds on aquarium grade silicone and smudge a thin layer of that over the sealant to be be sure you're taking no chances.

I would suggest something like drylok. Go to your hardware shop, get a can of drylok, and the colors you want and just mix the colors with drylok in disposable cups instead of buying premixed paint

By reading other threads people have reccomended polyeurthrane varnish. I have put a cost of that on because it was cheap. What constitutes aquarium grade silicone and where can I buy it?
