Question: Diverting water flow from a HOB filter

Wondering if anyone has some clever ways to divert the water flow of a Hang On the Back filter? I tried using a piece of plexi glass and divert it to the back of the tank but it is very awkward to try and fasten it so it doesnt float away.

This was my set up.

I used zip ties to hold the plexiglass in place.

We used a dremal to make the holes in the filter and the plexiglass.
