One of my firebellys died the other day. I understand they are poisoness? What is the best way to dispose of it? Husband suggested rubbish bin but I would hate for some cat to go through it and eat it and become ill. I thought of flushing it down the toilet but again I suppose something could get hold of it. Is burying it the best option?

I have no idea why it died. It looked very still and floppy one night and wouldnt lift its head to eat etc and next morning it had firm goopy stuff all in its mouth. We wernt 100% sure if it was dead so we stuck it in the freezer as if alive didnt want it to suffer.

You can probably double-bag it and toss it in the garbage.

Note, putting an animal in the freezer is not an easy way to go. They usually start to suffer from their tissues freezing before they lose consciousness. I imagine it is quite painful, since I've dealt with frostbite myself. Please see this article for acceptable, humane ways to dispatch an animal.

Once it's dead, you should freeze it for a couple of weeks to kill off any sort of bad bugs that may be lurking, and then it can be disposed of in the trash.

This has always been a question I've been interested in. If people bury their amhibians, flush them, or just throw them out. Personally, I've always buried my amphibians when they pass. Never thought about the possible toxins and the possible germs or disease. This has really been a useful thread for me.
