Dislocated Leg

Hello,

I have two 3 year old fire bellied newts - one has grown bigger as the other - and just tonight fearcely attacked the smaller to the detriment of his hind leg. It would look to be dislocated - although he would appear to be more or less unphased by the whole incident! as he is still eating quite the thing.

Is there any advice you could give regarding this leg?

The larger newt has now been isolated.

Regards,

John Smith.

Blimey that must have been some fight! It's not as if you can reset the leg in a splint as you would with some mammals. Without an x-ray it will be impossible to asses the damage fully. I would doubt a vet would be able to do much anyway. However, newts have remarkable regenerative capabilities - they can grow new legs completely. I would imagine that depending on the amount of damage, your newt will regain some or all of its leg function over time. Keep them separate until they are similar sizes. Good luck! Mark
