Hello everyone,

I have a question regarding disinfecting vivariums for amphibians. I built a new bioactive vivarium a few months ago to house some emperor newts, but I wound up missing the emperor newt sale. At this same time my 3 year old marbled newts all came down with some unknown illness that killed 2 of the 3 of them. The third began exhibiting similar features as the other two so I quarantined her and treated her with antibiotics for 3 weeks. She started to really rebound and looked good for a few weeks so I added her to the new vivarium I built since I was no longer getting the emperor newts. At this time I ran out of her antibiotics and her health rapidly declined and she died within a week. I removed her from the vivarium prior to her passing away. I know it's hard to say without knowing what caused the illness, but what can I do to restore the new vivarium and make sure it's safe for new animals? I think it should be safe because I don't think the infection was contagious, but instead a result of an issue with their prior enclosure, but I'm hesitant to spend hundreds of dollars on new salamanders that could potentially get sick from my marbled newt having been in the enclosure for a week. Let me know your thoughts. Thank you!

Dear All, I would appreciate some help identifying P. waltl disease and treatment. We received newts from Europe early November and a few maybe 3/70 had what it looked like lesions under the legs- at that time we thought maybe it was the stress of travel- now we think they probably had "red leg syndrome" (see picture). However a few weeks later other newts started to develop skin lesions (picture enclosed). The sender recommended to use sulfamerazine and we have treated them 2x and we are not sure they are all recovering. Does anyone have any experience with P. waltl diseases and could give some input on this? Any input would be greatly appreciated! Thank you.
