Differences between C. ensicauda subspecies

Is there a way to tell apart Cynops eniscuada eniscuada and Cynops eniscuada popei? thanks.

I was under the impression that C.e.p developed the gold flecks while C.e.e.(nominate) did not. However I have seen posts from people that had had exceptions to this.

Here's one from my personal experience : the Cynops enscauda ensicauda males develop a white tail the popei don't.
The popei develop more green and creemish dots on their back. The popei develop more of those orange ridge colors (lines on their back).

thanks, Just wondering are they equally common, and, which is more sought after?

Which subspecies is more common really depends on where you are. If you live next-door to a breeder of C.e.e., then that's going to be the subspecies that is more common in your neighborhood! Where did you get them? There are so few breeders in the US, that if you can identify where you bought them, we can probably tell you which kind they are.

Some would say that C.e. popei is more sought-after because the coloration is more interesting. Among some afficionados, the more white flecks, the more sought-after the specific animal is. For this reason, popei is probably more commonly bred, but both subspecies exist in the US.

I haven't got them yet,but will soon. They're some really cute newts. My tank is cycling ATM.

I got my cuties today, Ill be posting pics in a newthread soon. I beleive they are popei.

Looking forward to photos, Mina
