Depth of sand bed

In one of the threads the other day there was a comment on the depth of sand, and that if it were more than about an inch it could cause problems...

Could that comment be repeated here, I can't find it anywhere. Would like to read it again, could be the cause of someone's problem with their axi.

Thanks.

Sand deeper than an inch can lead to anaerobic bacteria. This bacteria is harmful to caudates.

Deeper sand also traps harmfull gases.
You can avoid these trapped gases by regularaly stirring your sand to release the gases and stop them from building up.

I'm not sure how axie friendly they would be (would depend on how big the axie is) but in my 40gal I have freshwater snails and clams that do this naturally. That is a fish/shrimp tank though.

easier to just have a smaller depth of sand.
