So far I've had 3 eggs hatch. One I was surprised at as it looked no where near as developed as the others. It has always had a swoillen belly, I figured it either wouldn't hatch or would fix itself before hatching. It hasn't. It doesn't seem to have fully formed gills either. I don't have my camera at the mo as I've lost the charger :( but I don't know what to do with the little guy, I can't bring myself to euthanase him and it doesn't seem to bother him other than when ghe floats upside down. Should I just let nature take its course and see what happens?

I had a lot look like that this time around and the have all died now :( but it took them 6 days to do it, they just weren't eating. If yours is eating and looks like he's continuing to develop maybe let him go but if you don't see him eat it may be kinder to "do him in" rather than allow him to starve to death.

I'll keep an eye on him then. He only hatched yesterday so is still absorbing his yolk. Take it the freezer trick will work with axies? That's probably the only way I could do it :(

Star sorry to say it but I had quite a few like that and I let nature take its course on this occasion as I did not feel experienced enough on the larvae front to make that decision :(

Thanks mere, unfortunately a 70cl bottle will be too much for one or two little guys so I will have to dispose of it in a creative way... ;) There seems to be a few deformed eggs that are still wiggling :( Poor little guys, I'll keep an eye on whether they feed or not before I get them drunk. One of the eggs has white dots inside the egg itself, it looks like the yolk, it's still moving though so I think it may be a really deformed one :( I guess it comes with first batches?

Was watching them before and my little deformed fella is definitely eating and chasing things so I might leave him for now and see what happens

Any ideas what may have caused it? I've seen other threads that speculate about inbreeding, but as a captive species they can all pretty much be traced back to the Indianna Colony, right? It would well nigh impossible for the parents to not be related in some way I'm thinking.

Hmm would have to ask Mojo if they were related but it was her wild type's first laying and I've read that first layings can case all kinds of problems so I guess it could be put down to that? I think one or my leucies is a result of inbreeding though as s/he has 5 legs. I think the majority of them can probably be traced back to the Indiana colony though with the odd few illegal WCs

Got any pictures of them?

That is entirely too cool! You have your own little X-man there!

Haha yup lovely little thing :D

I know its not an axie but one of my platys was born deformed also, it's tail fin looks like a spike rather than the fan the others have. I felt/feel really bad for it and also wondered if I should euthanise. I couldn't bring myself to do it though. I figured I'd let it go and see what happens, two weeks later and its still swimming strongly and eating its fighting so hard to survive I cant bring myself to not give it a chance. I'll have to keep an eye on it though prior to placing it in the main tank, the other female platy's in there cannibalised the male a day ago. I woke to find a stripped skeleton, I didn't realise Platys were so nasty lol!!!

Maybe theres a chance yours will be okay?

I'd agree. If s/he's eating, then there's hope! I've found that no matter what species, creatures all have a strong desire to live, and if your itty baby doesn't appear to be in pain, and is eating, than it deserves the chance! (Not to mention the person who's taking care of it is trying to do the VERY best for them!).
By the same token, don't feel bad, guilty or anything like that if things go downhill for the little guy, and know that you HAVE done everything you could for him/her, and that when you reach the big lake in the sky you can expect axie hugs!

I've given him his own little tub with LOTS of food so hoping he will survive, I hope so, I'll have another special little guy then! If he doesn't I guess it's for a reason and he will be better off. Fingers crossed :D

That sounds like a horrible thing to come across Cas! I went away this morning and had to take one of my axies to mum's last night as I discovered my wild type trying to eat him! Had visions of coming home to something similar... He's only in a little tank but already much happier and eating again :)
