Poor Darth has left us today for the big Axolotl palace in the sky.

Some of you know we rescued him a few weeks ago from someone who was going to "bleach him and flush down loo"

Up until today he was doing really fine - was loving his new tank set up - we had removed the gravel as suggsted on this site and lowered the water level slightly with his log sticking out a bit.He would come to the surface and bob his head out. Darth was even coming up when he saw us with his food so we presume he had settled now

We noticed he was not right this morning - all floppy and not moving much.We checked his tank - water was correct temperature and all ph balances etc were correct.Searched the internet for possible causes but nothing specific came up.Even rang our aquatic centre but they could not help.
This evening on checking him he was completely lifeless with his mouth wide open.

A proper buriel has taken place in our "small pets graveyard" under the tree (where all our little pets are, ranging from hamsters to budgies over the years).

We are all devastated at the moment as we cannot understand what we did wrong or why he passed on.If anyone can shed any light we would be grateful.

What were your other water parameters? Ammonia, nitrite, nitrates, and what was the temperature?

It could be that he was sick, and it caught up to him.

I'm sorry for your loss.

I am also sorry to hear your loss...Its always hard to
lose a pet, and must be even harder when you rescued
him and tryed to give um a good life. Best wishes

Probabely unlikely but, maybe there was too much waste in his set up, which ended up killing him. I have heard Axolotls and other big salamanders that live in the water(like the hellbender) die because once they produce a certain amount of waste, they can't relocate to somewhere else in the set up and all the toxins just fill there system and shut them down. Well, thats all I can give. And sorry for your loss. Its always hard when you lose a good animal friend. God Bless...

Dear All, I would appreciate some help identifying P. waltl disease and treatment. We received newts from Europe early November and a few maybe 3/70 had what it looked like lesions under the legs- at that time we thought maybe it was the stress of travel- now we think they probably had "red leg syndrome" (see picture). However a few weeks later other newts started to develop skin lesions (picture enclosed). The sender recommended to use sulfamerazine and we have treated them 2x and we are not sure they are all recovering. Does anyone have any experience with P. waltl diseases and could give some input on this? Any input would be greatly appreciated! Thank you.
