hi guys,

just need some advice on where to get some live daphnia from in london england. ive been searching the web but not sure if they are reliable sources.

my female axie has just laid between 30 and 50 eggs but i can tell already that some wont hatch. ive separated the eggs from the parents in a small tank.

i was thinking of buying some live daphnia for when they hatch in a couple of weeks but have no idea where to start.

any advice would be greatly appreciated to a new expectant hatchling parent

I bought 2 starter cultures of Daphnia off ebay. Threw them in a small tank on a sunny windowsill. I keep a container of water outside that's getting green and gooey...everytime the daphnia water looks clear I add a bit more green water and that's it.
Mine are breeding like mad and keep my 10 toddler lotls and my 9 baby lotls well fed ... the babies still get some bbs as well as daphnia.
(plus enough daphnia are bred for an occasional treat for my 4 tropical tanks :D).

how many do you feed the hatchlings when theyre born? might seem like a silly question but this is all new to me.

thanks

You siphon some daphnia out of your tank (use a turkey baster, and aim for the tiny ones and the giant pregnant ones, which will have babies in your feeding tank), and put it in with your hatchlings. It's just that easy!

If you're going to do 100% water changes, I would dump all your waste-water into a bucket, and put it back into the daphnia tank. 1.) You won't lose any daphnia that way, and 2.) Daphnia LOVE old tank water.

Yup, sounds good, just make sure you buy enough daphnia to feed the babies daily AND keep your culture going, baby axies wont eat the first couple of days becuase they have their egg sack but if your feeding them baby daphnia they will eat a few each maybe twice a day.
I just used to leave a couple in their tubs and if they ran out id put a couple more in, but not lots because you dont want to over feed the little ones :D

thanks so much guys, i really appreciate the advice. i will upload pics when they hatch.

thanks

If I ever raise babies, I'm going to keep this in mind.

its great advice. i thought my two axies were boys so as you can imagine it was quite a surprise to come home to loads of eggs. the eggs have developed loads already, you can see them starting to move.
