hi all have just purchased a new ft tank so that means i can hold two axolotls comfortably right? I don't get it till the end of the month wanted to ask a few questions first so i can make A PLAN.

QUESTION:

Is it advisable because of my inexperience to wait a while before getting a male axolotl?

QUESTION 2:

If i do decide to get a male early i have a tiny tank for any fry i may want to keep I will have no other tank to keep him separate while the new tanks cycling so should i just cycle the new tank with him in it? then add midnight after cycling?

QUESTION 3:

or should i just put him in with midnight and hope to god he doesn't have any bugs and cycle the new tank on its own? should i buy some guppy's to cycle the new tank? (she ate all the old ones) or do i have to get some bigger fish like a gold fish to help speed things up and not harm my Axis?

QUESTION 4:

I have been stocking up on plastic plants while here in Auckland is it OK to have one hide hole each? as i want the floor clutter free for cleaning and so they can move around more if they want and just load up the tank with plants?

QUESTION 5:

i have midnights filter designed for a 50-L tank and a air stone on a air pump will this be enough for the new tank? Any other suggestions welcome

I moved your thread to Tank setups as it will be easier for all to help out rather than adding to your sick axie post.

ANY new axolotl has to be quarantined for minimum 30 days. If you don't have the containers (even a bucket or plastic storage tub will do for temporary quarantine tank), then hold off buying another axolotl. How big is the tiny tank?

I wouldn't cycle him in the new tank (you need to ensure he is healthy) - adding him to a tank that is cycling could stress him out and make him sick.

Once your new tank is cycled you can definitely place Midnight in there. If he appears healthy after the quarantine period is complete, then and only then add him to the new tank.

By the way, axolotl larvae aren't fry they're larvae.

No - answered above! Whatever fish you add to the tank for cycling you have to take the same amount of care with them as you would cycling with an axolotl. It's cruel otherwise. You would have to test the water daily; and do the 20-30% waterchanges when needed (ammonia/nitrite levels above 0). If you visit any fish forum they would also give the same advice. Fish do not necessarily speed the cycling process. They are messy and tend to excrete heaps but it doesn't mean it will cycle your tank any faster.

Add some of the decos from the original axie tank and filter media to the new tank. You can also cycle the tank without fish or axies by dropping a cube of raw meat in the tank and leaving it. The decomposing meat will start the cycle. You can also add any axolotl poo or waste from your normal tank if you wish.

One hidey hole each is fine. If you have plenty of plants you'll find they will tend to hide or "hang out" amongst them more often than not.

By the way, how large is the new tank?

New Tank

hi all have purchased a new 4ft tank i pick it up at the end of the month i was wondering..

I can keep two in there comfortably?

Should I Wait to get a male because of my inexperiance?
but i feel confident i can handle two

I have a tiny tank i can use if and when i am ready to raise baby axies

should i put them both into midnights tank and hopefully he doesnt have any bugs while the new tank cycles?

should i quarantine and cycle the new tank with only him in it?

how many filters do i need for the 4ft tank? i have midnights filter that is designed for 50-60L and a airstone on a air pump

the measurements are as follows for the new tank

mm long mm high MM wide

i think am not 100% sure but the measurements for the tiny tank are say 20Cm long 15Cm high 20Cm wide will post proper measurements when i get home and sorry kapo didn't notice my thread had been moved

1200x450x450 are the measurements in mm i think wich translates to 120cm 45cm 45cm i think for the new big tank i have deceided to get a japanese fire belly newt for the old tank and wait a while to get a male axie sometime next year
