here are some shots of my hiroshima fire bellies, i only have a pair-so these differences may be individual and not gender/race reflective. first is the female from the side

Yes, the long toes are a gender difference in some races of C. pyrrhogaster. My "pet shop" JFB males have very long toes, and use them to hold the female in place while they wave their tale at her. I believe this indicates that mine are most likely Sasayame race.

Are there any other Americans out there that own (or have an interest in) specific races of C. pyrrhogaster? I suspect there are very few C.p. in the US with known locality. I'm glad to see these Hiroshimas.

Neat thing about the toes

I have one from Hyogo Prefecture with the longest toes I've ever seen in a pyrrho. Whadaya know, it's a male!

As far as locality goes though, keep in mind that just because these are of the Hiroshima race, that doesn't mean they're from anywhere near the prefecture Hiroshima or the city of the same name

C.p of this race are found in several other prefectures of western Honshu Island, and also throughout two other of Japan's four main islands, namely Kyushu and Shikoku.

There are also some signficant genetic differences between newts of this race found in the southernmost part of Kyushu and those found elsewhere in the range of this race.

Most of the C.p in the pet trade here in Japan are of the Hiroshima race, by the way. Newts of this race tend to be significantly smaller overall than C.p of other races with less dark coloration (spots, blotches, lines) on the belly the further south you go.

Cool, Paris!

i am actually very interested in aquiring C.p with locality data. I may be one of the few though.

the larvae are approaching morphing, bellies starting to get reddish and a few spots appearing on their sides, remember this thread?http://www.caudata.org/forum/messages/7/38031.html?1119169743
im thinking what caused it was RO water (i thought it was just filtered) i used on them, they have improved since i stopped doing 100% water changes, only a few were not affected and those that were have straightened out a bit but its still noticible, i have 11 as of now and they are over 1", so they look as if they will morph bigger than my other kinds
