I have now recently purchased elodea for my cynops orientalis' tank.
i did this as i believe 2 of my females are Gravid.
however my only question is that does gravid neccesarilly mean that they will definately lay?

sorry for the basicness of this question

Hello:happy:

If the newts ARE gravid, typically, one of three things can happen:

1. The newt will lay fertile, developing eggs.
2. The newt will lay infertile eggs.
3. The newt will re-absorb the eggs and not lay anything at all.

Good Luck!

As Nathan said, the normal thing would be laying(fertile or infertile) the eggs. However, if suitable laying areas are not available, the animal is sick, etc, they can re-absorb the eggs.
That´s why it is important to provide suitable laying areas for each species.
In my experience, C.orientalis have a great tendency to lay eggs in rather wide, but very flexible leaves. My female never uses Elodea, and rarely uses java moss. However, every single java fern leaf is used, often several times.
That by no means is definitive. Every individual will have their own favourite laying plant. Thus, offering variety is the key to success.

Elodea is perhaps not ideal because although the leaves are flexible enough, they are small and offer little cover for the eggs. Mind you, other species or individuals might find it irressistible....
Plastic stripes are accepted by some individuals, so it´s worth a shot.

Thank you for all your comments . about the plants i have many different ones in my tank uderneath the land dock is the elodea and then 2 aquatic palms ( not sure what they are called)
as well as that i have 3 other plants that grow alot and therefore i am confident they will lay
