Alright, this might be the dumbest question out there in the whole universe (black holes included) but when you cycle a tank, no axies, is it necessary to do water changes? Never got an answer so far.

Water changes are not needed as often & due to not having to keep the levels low for a cycle while keeping fish alive, you can let the ammonia levels rise higher which attracts / creates the good bacteria. Hence you add your own ammonia source or your own pure ammonia & then test it to regularly to confirm where in the cycle your tank is.

So not as much water changes at first - then once you're getting nitrates in decent levels - start doing small frequent changes to get the levels down so that it becomes "fish friendly"

I hope that helps :)
