So I have been cycling my tank since the last week of October and I just don't understand why I can't get it cycled. Up until the 25th of Nov my readings where constantly 0 ppm of ammonia and 0.25ppm of nitrites constantly (adding enough emmonia daily to get 2 ppm 30 mins later. On Nov 25th I did a 75% water change and my numbers 24 hours later where still wonky with my ammonia and my nitrites being high. By Nov 30 I finally got my tank to 0 ppm of ammonia and 0 ppm of nitrites for 2 days in a row. Today being day 3 and I just tested again and I'm now at 0 ppm of ammonia but my nitrites where back up again. I don't understand what I'm doing wrong or how to fix this. I have a 20 gallon tank, I'm using the original filter that came with it but I added a 40 gallon sponge filter to it. Please help.
