My juveniles, now a total of 59 - ranging from almost 4 months post-morph to recently morphed, have been fed fruit flies and springtails exclusively. Waxworms have been periodically offered, but I think are too big for them and have gone untouched. I was advised to get pinhead crickets, but can't find them. My local pet stores said that 2 week old crickets were the youngest they could get. Would these be too large for the newts? I get large crickets for my leopard gecko and small ones for my White's Tree frog, but even the "small" ones seem too big for the juvenile newts. I don't know how old the small ones are.

Thanks,
Dana

There's a pretty decent size difference between pinheads and 2 weeks. I know my A. maculatum morphs from this summer love the occasional pinhead...the only newts I have that are large enough to take 2 week old crickets are Tylototrion shanjing I bought last December as metamorphs.

I am personally unfamiliar with pinhead crickets, but I would imagine that even the 'small' labeled crickets from pet shops are too big for juveniles. My adult Orientalis loves small crickets, but even smaller adults that I've had in the past have had a hard time with them.

I have a local pet shop that does a special order for me once/wk for pinheads. If you have a locally-owned pet shop (not a big chain), it might be worth asking if they can do something like this. If not, you might consider mail ordering pinheads once/month as variety.
