Its a bit late this year due to the unbelievably bad weather, but my fiancee has just beat me to it and found the first Triturus cristatus return to my garden ponds.
They are generally here
Thats going to be me out there with my torch every night now lol
 
I have just been back out armed with a torch and camera to try see the crested again, but instead saw this male Triturus vulgaris close to the entrance to the underground hibernaculum I have in the garden for newts to overwinter in

lovely. In January! Where I grew up in central Germany, we wouldn't see them till late Feb at the earliest :)
 
In my country some cristatus hibernate in water, most of them are aquatic since late february- early march...i remember one year arriving to a beautifull pond where in february there were lots of male cristatus and vulgaris moving under the thin ice, searching the worm water of the shallows...
 
Not seen any GCN but have Smooth newts during last two nights emerging in my garden from dry stone wall.
